Alison Roman Saying I Have a Perfect Pie, Best Summer Ice Cream, and New Restaurant Discoveries
Above is the ice cream from Sofreh in Prospect Heights that is pistachio, rose water, and saffron ice cream all mixed together! Divine.
This is from Bread & Butter at 53 Rockaway Ave. in Bed-Stuy. It is corn and brown butter soft serve! This is from last year but this year they have done a lot of great soft serve flavors like watermelon, strawberry short cake, pineapple upside down cake, and key lime pie. They also have a great selection of bakery items.
Other ice cream spots:
The Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory | Chinatown
Love the pandan and ube flavors best here!
Morgenstern’s | Soho
Creative selection of flavors, and they change periodically. Blueberry chocolate and raw milk are my favorite flavors.
Other restaurant recommendations!
Masalawala & Sons | Park Slope
Bengali food! The kosha mangsho lamb stew absolutely blew me away.
Báhn by Lauren | Chinatown
I followed this when it was a pop up and it now has a brick and mortar location! Vietnamese-American and French pastries. I recommend fried sesame rice balls filled with coconut and mung beans, pandan macarons, and a slice of bánh bò nướng.
Titi’s Empanadas | Williamsburg
I recommend the choripan empanada, an Argentinian classic.
Sushi Lin | Prospect Heights
Relatively cheap omakase that was delicious and inventive!
Sour cherry pie from Alison Roman’s third cookbook, Sweet Enough. I have to say it’s the best pie I’ve ever had in my life. WARNING: it does take a ton of time to de-pit the cherries. If you choose to take on this adventure it will be a labor of love in the pursuit of perfection. Alison and I chopping it up in the DMs below. P.S. Use hazelnuts and pistachios for the crumble.
